Restaurants in the USA
Steve’s Pizza
So many pizza chains compete for the attention of tourists in South Beach, but ask a Miami Beach local where to get the best pizza and they’ll tell you about Steve’s. This is New York–style pizza, handmade with care and good ingredients(成份). New branches of Steve’s are opening elsewhere in Miami, all in non-tourist areas.
Opening hours: 11am-3am
Cattleman’s Steakhouse
This place is 20 miles east of the city, but local folks would probably drive 200 miles to eat here. The food is good, and the scenery is even better. Come early and wander around the grounds of Indian Cliffs Ranch, where you’ll see everything from rabbits to buffalo (水牛), then catch the sunset either before or after your meal.
Opening hours: 5pm-10pm
Absolute Baking & Cafe
The screen door is always swinging open at this town hot spot with giant breakfasts. Try the green chili on eggs – it’s made from scratch, as are the organic(有机的) breads. Lunch includes salads, big sandwiches and local grass-fed beef burgers. Don’t miss a square of soft, fresh carrot cake.
Opening hours: 7am-2pm
Walt’s Wharf
Everybody’s favorite for fresh fish (some drive in from LA), Walt’s packs them in on weekends. You can’t make reservations for dinner (though they’re accepted for lunch), but it’s worth the wait for the tree fire–grilled seafood and steaks in the many-windowed ground floor or upstairs in captain’s chairs.
Opening hours: 11am-3:30pm
21. The new branches of Steve’s Pizza are mainly intended for_________.

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee(拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法)to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.
24. What can we learn about the Character Hero?
A. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
B. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.
C. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D. It draws great public attention across the country.
25. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
26. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.
A. necessary for adults to survive in China
B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
           D. an ability to be developed only when you are students
27. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A news report.                                             B. A science report.
C. An advertisement.                                         D. Children’s literature.

Next time you hear a funny joke you’d better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn’t always the best medicine. Sometimes it can even be harmful. Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says: “We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their heart, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who’d dislocated their jaws or burst their lungs.”
It seems that laughing can be no laughing matter. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to lose weight, for example. Yes, that’s right: laugh and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: “You use energy when you laugh, you move your diaphragm(横膈膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful.”
According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn up to 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you’d use up about 2,000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don’t do that or you might end up with a painful jaw. Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a funny way.
But I don’t want to finish this article leaving you feeling desperate. Laughter comes naturally for most of us. Babies begin to laugh at around 3-6 months. So give in to your sense of humour and keep smiling. Life is short anyway.
28. Laughing too much may cause the following harmful results EXCEPT_________.
A. heart stop                                                        B. diaphragm movement
C. lung burst                                                        D. jaw dislocation
29. The underlined phrase “doom and gloom” in Paragraph 2 probably means_______.
A. hopeless                        B. funny                        C. painful                        D. nervous
30. How many calories can you use if you laugh for half a day?
A. About 40.                        B. About 1,000.        C. About 2,000.                D. About 2,040.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards laughing in the last paragraph?
A. Uninterested.            B. Disapproving.  C. Worried.               D. Favorable.

I teach geography at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth removed. The young man then asked me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. “I choose to be cheerful.” I said. Then I told them a story.
In addition to teaching here at UNLV, I also teach out at the community college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. One day I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died and wouldn’t start again. So I left my car there and marched down the road to the college.
As soon as I got there I called AAA (美国汽车协会)and arranged for a tow truck (拖车) to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the office asked me what had happened. “This is my lucky day.” I replied, smiling.
“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?” She was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway but it didn’t.” I replied, “Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance from here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class.” The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class. So ended my story.
I scanned the sixty faces in my class at UNLV. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student’s observation that I was cheerful. An Indian wise man once said, “Who you are speaks louder to me than anything you can say.” I suppose it must be so.
32. Why did the author tell his students the story?
A. To share his lucky experience.                B. To make his class more lively.
C. To draw all students’ attention.                D. To encourage his students to be positive.
33. What happened to the author on his way to the community college?
A. He parked his car in a perfect place.
B. He called AAA for a tow truck to meet him.
C. He covered the last quarter mile on foot.
D. He drove off the freeway at a wrong exit.
34. By saying “it wasn’t the story at all”, the author means that_______.
A. His story is not convincing
B. He shouldn’t have told the story
C. His attitude to life has inspired the students
D. His story is not as interesting as expected
35. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Easier said than done.                                B. You are what you choose.
C. Behind bad luck comes good luck.         D. A good beginning makes a good ending.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Here are tips for a successful speech from a professional speechwriter:
No speech should last more than 20 minutes.    36    The Sermon on the Mount, a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus, for example, lasted hardly more than three minutes.
Focus on one topic. We’re human and tend to have lots of thoughts, opinions and ideas. You have to make proper selection.    37    Include and expand only those that explain and support your viewpoint(观点).
38   It’s important to remember that your words must be hearable and understandable the first time out.
Humour is vital.    39    Ronald Reagan always wanted to joke at the start of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.
Don’t forget to say thanks. You should always, at the beginning of the speech, thank the person who invited you and introduced you.    40   While you’re doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They’re going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before you get to the heart of your remarks.
A. Choose your words carefully.
B. And saying thanks at the beginning has a practical purpose.
C. First you have to work out what you’re going to say.
D. Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.
E. Stick to one subject-the future of the soccer club, for example.
F. This process takes time, so start once you begin thinking about the speech.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Many students may feel   61   (stress) because of their parents. Most parents have good intentions,    62   some of them aren’t very helpful with the problems their sons and daughters have in   63   (adjust)to college, and a few of them seem to go out of their way to add to their children’s    64   (difficulty).
For one thing, parents are often not aware of the kinds of problems their children face. They don’t realize that the   65   (compete) is stronger, that the required standards of work are    66   (high), and that their children may not be prepared for   67   change. They may be upset by their children’s poor grades. At their kindest, they may   68   (gentle) ask why John or Mary isn’t doing better, whether he or she is trying as hard as he or she should, and so on. At their worst, they may threaten   69   (take) their children out of college or cut off living expenses.
Sometimes parents think it right and natural that they determine   70   their children do with their lives. They forget that everyone is different and that each person must develop in his or her own way.

【范文】
Dear Adam,
I‘m deeply sorry but I have to let you know that I lost the English novel Gone with the Wind which I borrowed from you a month ago. I like it so much that I took it with me wherever I went. Unfortunately , the other day during a trip to Beijing I was in such a hurry to get off the train that I forgot to put it back in my bag. I‘m so sorry as I know the novel was a birthday present from your father.
Hard as I tried, I was not able to find the novel in any bookstore here. I wonder if you would like to take the Chinese-English version which will hopefully help improve your Chinese.

(Text 1)
W: Tom, Mike told me that your French dictionary was lost last week.
M: Mine wasn’t but Bill’s was.
(Text 2)
W: Are you going to Chicago tomorrow?
M: Yes. I had thought I’d drive or fly, but I come to think that taking a bus is cheaper and more convenient.
(Text 3)
W: Why were you late for the music class this morning?
M: I’m so sorry. I went to bed too late and didn’t hear the alarm this morning.
W: Well, I hope it won’t happen next time.
(Text 4)
M: Excuse me.
W: Yes. What can I do for you?
M: I’d like to take those three books out and return these.
W: OK, but they should have been returned earlier. I’ll have to charge you for two days.
(Text 5)
M: What’ll you do with your cat when you leave for vacation?
W: Well, I’m having Ken take care of it.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea.
(Text 6)
W: Here in the middle with the beautiful white hair is my grandmother. We call her Joy.
M: She looks energetic.
W: Yeah. Here next to my grandmother on the left is Andrew, my grandfather.
M: With the glasses?
W: Yeah. Isn’t he handsome? Actually, he looks pretty good for someone 70 years old. Don’t you
think so?
M: He surely does. And your grandmother, is she the same age?
W: No. She’s five years younger.
M: Does your grandfather still work in a company?
W: No. He’s retired now.
(Text 7)
M: I’m going to a job fair tomorrow.
W: Is that with the American company?
M: Yes, that’s right.
W: So where is the work place of that American company?
M: In London. Since you are the experienced one, can you give me some suggestions?
W: You’d better pay more attention to your letter of application. You should print your application
letter on good-quality white paper.
M: OK, I got it. Anything more?
W: You’d better get someone to check for spelling and grammatical errors.
M: So, can you help me to do this work?
W: Of course, with pleasure.
M: That’s very kind of you.
(Text 8)
W: What’s your favourite sport?
M: It’s difficult to say — I like many sports but I think I like football best, because I can play in a
team. How about you?
W: I don’t like football. It’s a boy’s game, I think. Jogging is quiet and relaxing. Do you like it?
M: No, I seldom jog. I prefer cycling to jogging. I enjoy seeing the countryside.
W: I’ve heard that you are also good at swimming.
M: Ah, yes. Swimming is my second favourite. It gives me a chance to have fun with my friends,
especially in summer. But in winter I usually play table tennis. It’s such good exercise.
(Text 9)
M: I was at the Student Health Services yesterday. They told me that my blood pressure is too
high.
W: Then I suppose you need a diet to help bring your blood pressure down.
M: That’s right! The doctor told me to see the university nutritionist about it, so here I am. He
gave me this note for you.
W: Let me see. This is a list of the content of different foods. You should say goodbye to potato
chips and some meat, such as pork!
M: Oh, no.
W: Yes, and goodbye to processed food in general. But you can have almost all fruits and
vegetables.
M: That part is OK. What worries me is where to eat. Do I have to eat at the university hospital?
W: Not at all. I just call the dining-hall manager. He handles all sorts of special menus.
M: What if I want to go to a restaurant?
W: Just use your list and select your food carefully.
M: Thanks a lot. This won’t be nearly as bad as I’d thought.
(Text 10)
M: I have a lovely little daughter. Her name is Ellen. She is only ten years old, but I always take pride in her. She was born with a hearing problem and a slow response-time to sounds. She came home one spring day to tell me she had competed in a sports meeting, where they had lots of races and other competitive events. Because of her listening disabilities, I tried to think of words to encourage her. I didn’t want to let her down. I have heard many famous coaches do so when athletes are faced with defeat. But before I could speak, she looked up and told me she won two of the races and she had an advantage. I couldn’t believe it. Ah, I knew it. She must have been given a head start. But before I could say anything, she said, “Daddy, I didn’t get a head start ... my advantage was I had to try much harder.”
