Having a husband means an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, getting married saves an hour of housework a week. “It’s a well-known pattern,” said lead researcher Frank Stafford at University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. “Men usually work more outside the home, while women take on more of the housework.”
He points out that differences among households (家庭) exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. “And the situation gets worse for women when they have children.” Stafford said.
Overall, times are changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of sweeping-and-dusting work, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are taking on more housework, more than doubling their housework hours from six in 1976 to 13 in 2005.
Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most – about 21 hours a week.
Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom more often than younger men. Single men worked the hardest around the house, more than that of all other age groups of married men.
Having children increases housework even further. With more than three, for example, wives took on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands’ 10 hours.
21. According to the “well-known pattern” in Paragraph 1, a married man ________.
A. takes on heavier work                                        B. does more housework
C. is the main breadwinner                           D. is the master of the house
22. How many hours of housework did men do every week in the 1970s?
A. About 28                B. About 26                        C. About 13                      D. About 6
23. What kind of man is doing most housework according to the text?
A. An unmarried man.                            B. An older married man.
C. A younger married man.                        D. A married man with children.
24. What can we conclude from Stafford’s research?
A. Marriage gives men more freedom.
B. Marriage has effects on job choices.
C. Housework sharing changes over time.
D. Having children means doubled housework.

GUATEMALA CITY(Reuters)--- A fish that lives in mangrove swamps(红树沼泽)across the Americas can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted(适应)to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.
The Mangrove Rivulus, a type of small killifish, lives in small pools of water in a certain type of empty nut or even old beer cans in the mangrove swamps of Belize, the United States and Brazil. When their living place dries up, they live on the land in logs(圆木), said Scott Taylor, a researcher at the Brevard Endangered Lands Program in Florida.
The fish, whose scientific name is Rivulus marmoratus, can grow as large as three inches. They group together in logs and breathe air through their skin until they can find water again.
The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize.
“We kicked over a log and the fish just came crowding out,” Taylor told Reuters in neighboring Guatemala by telephone. He said he will make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.
In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.
Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at a time, while lungfish found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in an inactive state. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and remain active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at Canada’s University of Guelph.
Further studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.
“These animals live in conditions similar to those that existed millions of years ago, when animals began making the transition(过渡)form water onto land, ” Wright said.
25. The Mangrove Rivulus is a type of fish that ________.
A. likes eating nuts
B. prefers living in dry places
C. is the longest living fish on earth
D. can stay alive for two months out of water
26. According to the text, lungfish can _______.
A. breathe through its skin                                B. move freely on dry land
C. remain alive out of water                                D. be as active on land as in water
27. What can we say about the discovery of Mangrove Rivulus?
A. It was made quite by accident.
B. It was based on a lab test of sea life.
C. It was supported by an American magazine.
D. It was helped by Patricia Wright.

The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin’s older brother, started the New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.
Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin’s Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers(广告商),readers, market value, and in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor(主编) of the Times said recently, “At places where they gather, editors ask one another, ‘How are you?’, as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case.” An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline “NOT DEAD YET.”
Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock (股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock-holders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post Company has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the company’s income.
28. What can we learn about the New England Courant?
A. It is mainly about the stock market.
B. It marks the beginning of the American newspaper.
C. It remains a successful newspaper in America.
D. It carries articles by political leaders.
29. What can we infer about the newspaper editors?
A. They often accept readers’ suggestions.
B. They care a lot about each other’s health.
C. They stop doing business with advertisers.
D. They face great difficulties in their business.
30. Which of the following found a new way for its development?
A. The Washington Post.
B. The Guardian.
C. The New York Times.
D. New England Courant.
31. How does the author seem to feel about the future of newspapers?
A. Satisfied.                B. Hopeful.                         C. Worried.                        D. Surprised.

How Room Designs Affect Our Work and Feelings
Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical (经验的,实证的) basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.
Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room‘s ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.
In additions to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant‘s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.
Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.
Recent study on room lighting design suggests than dim (暗淡的) light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.
So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. 'We have a very limited number of studies, so we‘re almost looking at the problem through a straw (吸管),' architect David Allison says. 'How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That‘s what we‘re all struggling with.'
32. What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research?
A. Light.                        B. Ceilings.                          C. Windows.                     D. Furniture.
33. The passage tells us that ______.
A. the shape of furniture may affect people‘s feelings
B. lower ceilings may help improve students‘ creativity
C. children in a dim classroom may improve their grades
D students in rooms with unblocked views may feel relaxed
34. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that ______.
A. the problem is not approached step by step
B. the researches so far have faults in themselves
C. the problem is too difficult for researchers to detect
D research in this area is not enough to make generalized patterns
35. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?

Three Critical Truths We Forget All Too Soon
So much happens in our lives every day that we often forget what we have learned. In effect, the only thing faster than the speed of our thoughts is the speed of our forgetfulness.   36
1. Small steps get you to big places.
The greatest of all mistakes is to do nothing simply because you can only do a little. In fact, it is far more productive to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a giant leap.   37    Figure out where you want to go, take a step, and keep on stepping. Diligence and persistence will get you there.
2.   38
Two people can be affected by the same circumstance but respond in completely different ways. The reason is that it just depends on their attitudes. When you expect life to be unkind, it will always live up to your expectations. On the other hand, when you consider yourself to be in a fortunate situation, you will find yourself in many more.   39
3. You can only change yourself.
Don‘t wait for someone who hurt you to make it up to you; this kind of thinking only keeps your old wounds from healing.   40   You have no control over them, and they may never change. Inner peace is found by changing your thinking, not the people who hurt you. So forgive those who have hurt you in the past, and even more importantly, forgive yourself for allowing them to hurt you. Then smile like you‘ve never cried re-open your heart and mind like you‘ve never been hurt, and live the rest of your life like you‘re running out of time.
A. Fear always exists.
B. Attitude makes all the difference.
C. Waiting for them to change is not the answer.
D. Here are some important reminders to jog your memory.
E. The path to every goal requires a hundred small steps-one after the other.
F. In the end, we learn even more from our failures than we do from our successes.
G. It’s important to remember that there is value in every situation and circumstance.

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Tom: Have you heard the local newspaper The Times is closing down in three months‘ time?
Mary: Then that‘s good news. That newspaper is terrible. I won‘t miss it.
Tom:   61   do you mean? The Times is the best newspaper in the city. If that   62   ( close) down, we‘ll only have The Pioneer and the City Journal, which is too bad.
Mary: You only like The Times   63   it takes up to 20 pages every day with sports. The City Journal is a great paper. And you don‘t like it because it devotes less than 5 pages every day   64   baseball results.
Tom: This is a baseball city. We‘ve got a great team. Why shouldn‘t we read about it? Where are we going to get the results now?
Mary: I think a newspaper needs to meet all the   65   ( need) of its readers, not just that of those   66   like sports.
Tom: Then what about the Job Section in The Times? That was one of the most   67   (use) parts of it. Every business, every store in the city knows if they want to get someone   68   (work) for them, they have to put some ads in The Times. How are all these people going to get work now? This will   69   (absolute) destroy the local economy.
Mary: Destroy the local economy, will it? I admit the Job Section was pretty good in The Times,   70   either one of the other two newspapers will just get the ads instead. That‘s how things work.

There are lots of experience in our life. The most unforgettable one for me is the speech competition holding last year. I’m interested in English. When my English teacher told me that I had chosen to take part in the speech competition, I devoted me to the preparation. I was determined to win the first prize. I was such nervous when I stood on the stage that I forgot everything. Not until I caught a sight of my teacher did I calm down. Finally, I do a good job. When I heard I got the first prize, my heart was filled in joy and tears rolled down.
Through this speech competition, I understand that it is confidence which makes people successfully.
