LONDON-Drinking heavily in front of children sets a bad example and letting them taste alcohol in the form of watered-down(渗水的) wine is misguided, says Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson.Donaldson said an alcohol-free child is the healthiest and best choices.“Across England, half a million children between the ages of 11 and 15 years have been drunk in the past four weeks,”he said.
“Drinking, particularly at a young age,a lack of parental supervision(监管),exposing children to drink-fueled events and failing to engage with them as they grow up are the root causes from which our country’s serious alcohol problem has happened.”He said that if children aged between 15 and 17 are drinking,it should be no more than one day a week, and under parental supervision. Before that, drinking should be forbidden.
Donaldson criticized parents who get drunk in front of their children and said there is clear evidence that the earlier young people get a taste for alcohol, the more likely they are to develop drink problem later in life.He also criticized as “a middle-class addict” the giving of watered-down wine to children in the mistaken belief that it will turn them into sensible, moderate drinkers.
‘If children see their parents or other family members becoming drunk then they see that as socially acceptable behavior,”he told a reporter.
Donaldson’s advice has been supported by others.Chris Sorek,Chief Executive of charity Drinkaware, said,“The drinking culture in the UK is firmly established and many people see drinking alcohol as a necessary part in the process of their growth. It’s important that from an early age,we start to educate children and young people about the dangers of alcohol misuse.”

D
There was a time, not so long ago, when I was busy, busy. At least I thought I was.
I told people I worked 60 hours a week. I declared to sleep six hours a night. As I complained to anyone stuck next to me at parties, I was basically too busy to breathe.
Now I work 45 hours a week and sleep close to eight hours a night. But I’m not getting any less done. My secret? I started keeping track of how I spent my time, logging how many hours and minutes I devoted to different activities, sleep and chores.
I soon realized I’d been lying to myself about where the time was going. What I thought was a 60-hour workweek wasn’t even close. I would have guessed I spent hours doing dishes when in fact I spent minutes. I spent much time lost on the Internet or hanging about, unsure exactly what I was doing.
I‘m not alone in this time fog. If you believe results from some studies, plenty of people have false impressions of how they spend time in our “too-rushed-to-breath” world.
We all have the same 168 hours per week—a number few people think it over even as they talk about “24-7” with abandon—but since time passes whether we admit it or not. we seldom think through exactly how we’re spending our hours.
We also live in a competitive society, and so by complaining about our overwork, we show that we devoted to our jobs and our families. Being “busy” and “starved for time” is a way to show we matter. Put another way, it makes us feel important.
But if you think about it, complaining about a lengthy to-do list is not only boring, it’s sad excuse for one’s self-esteem(自尊). Owning up to how we spend our hours gives us more control of our time, and finally, of our lives.
43. What does the author mainly talk about in the first two paragraphs?
A. He was made so busy all by himself.     B. He was once terribly busy every day.
C. He has a good six-hour sleep a night.      D. He was too busy to stand his daily life.
44. The expression “24-7” (in Para. 6)most probably means __________.
A. 7 hours a day for rest or sleep      B. 7days a week and 24 hours a day.
C. 7 hours taken away from 24 hours       D. work hours decreased from 24 to 7.
45. To settle our “time fog”, the author thinks, we should first __________.
A. build up self-confidence in our daily life
B. give up complaining about our lengthy to-do list.
C. know that it’s important to own enough available time
D. make it clear how much time we have improperly used.
46. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. Why you are so busy.     B. Where your time goes.
C. How to control your time.      D. How to evaluate work time.

In modern times, the development of electronic books has changed the ways of reading. It is very convenient for readers to download(下载) electronic books on the Internet.
However, experts say that such readers won’t be able to absorb efficiently what they have read, because the information is shown in such a simple form. Some e-readers, such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, show texts clearly to readers. This encourages the brain to be “lazy” and make readers easily forget what they have just read, experts say.
A study by Princeton University found that many readers can recall more information after reading if they read paper books. Compared with electronic books, paper books are less convenient for readers to read. Such difficulty in reading makes readers cherish (珍惜)the information they are reading and encourages their brain to think. As a result, the efficiency of reading will be improved greatly. Experts say if readers got information actively. that is to say, if they read paper books, they will be able to remember the information longer than those who passively read electronic books.
Other experts say that e-readers and computers may stop us from absorbing information, because the screens may make you feel that the words on the screen are not important. Mr. Lehrer, an expert, said, “E-readers have changed people’s reading habits, but they make people’s ability of reading degenerate(退化). ”
47. Now a lot of electronic books have changed __________.
A. people’s ways of eating        B. people’s ways of speaking.
C. people’s ways of reading.     D. people’s ways of learning.
48. The Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader __________.
A. are two electronic texts    B. can be used to learn English
C. are new kinds of computers     D. may make readers’ brain “lazy”
49. According to the study, if readers read paper books, they __________.
A. will forget the information they have just read easily.
B. won’t think more about what they are reading
C. can recall more information after reading
D. will fall asleep easily
50. From the passage, we can know __________.
A. people’s reading habits don’t change at all.
B. the efficiency of reading is higher if people read paper books
C. electronic books are less convenient for readers to read e-readers
D. people easily forget what they have read because they read too much

You could turn your back for a moment in my mother’s house, leave a half-written letter on the dining room table] a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had put it back where it belonged, as she explained.
My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother’s house, placed a packet of biscuits on a table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused, she put down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to(有……的倾向)forgetfulness. And it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find that every sign of her work progress had disappeared suddenly. “Do you remember what I was doing?” was a question frequently asked. but rarely answered.
Now my sister has developed a second-hand love of clean windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to hit his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week.
