第二部分   阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节   (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.
As a writer, I know about winning contests – and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous masters. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can be embodied in our children.
An inspiration came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”
I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she independently told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.
Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.
31. Which of the statements will the author agree with?
A. Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.
B. Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.
C. Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.
D. A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.
32. Which of the following word can replace the underlined word “embodied” in paragraph 2?
A. put       B. expressed        C. connected       D. included
33. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?
A. She wanted to share her stories with readers.
B. She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.
C. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.
D. She had won a prize in the previous contest.
34. The author took great pains to improve her daughter’s stories because _______.
A. she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writer
B. she was afraid Rebecca’s imagination might run wild while writing
C. she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much
D. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance

B
Searching for airfares often seems like a game that passengers are bound to lose. Prices change from day to day, even minute to minute. Looking through multiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge. Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price.
“You just don’t know when to pull the trigger. It’s not like buying anything else I can think of, ” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com.
Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round-trip flight on American Airlines between New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her, Shirley Harrison paid $215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360.
There’s no reason for it, Harrison said.
Fares can change significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $718 on Sunday.
The flight was one of a dozen the Associated Press followed over three months for a vacation between July 16 and 22. The number one finding: avoid booking tickets on weekends. It’s the most expensive time to buy.
There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers should pay attention to this additional advice:
& Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer sales.
& Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks before traveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to 10 weeks and two to three weeks in advance.
& Make use of social media. Airlines are giving more benefits like exclusive (独家) sales to travelers who interact with them on Twitter and Facebook. Those specials are often gone within hours.
& The so-called discount airlines – JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier –
adjust their fares less frequently than other airlines, so you can feel more confident that the price will stay the same. But their prices aren’t always the lowest. Researching multiple airlines’ fares is the only way to get a good deal.
35. What can we learn from the text?
A. Passengers are unable to search for airfares.
B. Airlines often play games with passengers.
C. The earlier you book, the lower airfares you’ll pay.
D. It’s difficult for passengers to get the best price.
36. The underlined phrase “pull the trigger” in Paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A. start searching                     B. get the highest price
C. make a purchase                   D. get on board the plane
37. By using a lot of figures in the example, the author intends to _______.
A. show there is standard price for every single airline
B. discover the rules behind airfares
C. guarantee passengers a low price
D. prove airfares can vary widely
38. Passengers are advised to book flights _______.
A. in the middle of the week
B. on special websites
C. several months before traveling
D. with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices

Turning left under a bridge in Beijing, Hu Xingxin, 24, suddenly braked to a stop in front of a yellow light at a busy crossroad.
“According to the new traffic regulations, running a yellow light is equal to running a red one,” said the Beijing-based IT technician. “Since the new rules came into effect I’m always ready to hit the brakes to avoid a penalty.”
Authorities have since changed the rules and running a yellow light no longer results in a 6-point punishment.
New traffic regulations are the latest measure to improve road safety, which has become a problem in China. Experts say that to achieve better road safety, various and comprehensive methods are needed. Updating the rules are only part of the story.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), traffic accidents kill more people around the world than malaria and are the leading cause of death for young people aged 5 to 29 -- especially in developing countries. Each year up to 1.3 million people are killed and more than 50 million injured in traffic accidents around the world.
The economic consequences are also significant: according to a study by the World Bank and Harvard University, traffic accidents on average cost a country 1 to 3 percent of its annual Gross National Product..
The newly revised regulations impose much heavier punishment on drivers who violate traffic rules. Under the new regulations, 52 different violations result in penalties, up from 38 under the previous system.
Eleven kinds of violations now result in the deduction of 12 points, compared to six points under the previous regulation. These violations include drunken driving and using fake license plates, as well as driving without a valid license.
But traffic regulations are only one aspect of many regarding problems with road safety in China. Other components of road safety include technology and urban design.

The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are boosters to the brain and better therapy than some guide books, researchers say this week.
Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the Bard and other classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-reflection. Using scanners (扫描仪器), they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S Eliot and others.
They then “translated” the original texts into more “straightforward”, modern language and again monitored the readers’ brains as they read the words.
Scans showed that the more “challenging” essays and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the much plainer versions.
Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it was “activated” as the readers encountered unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structure.
This “activation” of the mind lasts longer, shifting the brain to a higher speed, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry, in particular, increases activity in the right hemisphere of the brain, helping the reader to reflect on their own experiences, which they compare with what they have read. This, according to the researchers, meant that the classic works were more useful than guide books.
Philip Davis, an English professor believes 'The research shows the power of literature to shift thinking patterns, to create new thoughts, shapes and connections in the young and adults alike.”
47. What does the underlined “it” stand for in paragraph 5?
A. Each word of the literary works.    B. A certain difficult sentence structure.
C. The scanner.                    D. Brain activity.
48. How was the experiment carried out?
① The classics were rewritten in simpler languages.
② A reader’s brain activity was recorded when reading original Shakespeare.
③ Compare the electrical activities of the brain.
④ A reader’s brain activity was recorded when reading the revised versions.
A. ①③④②   B. ②④①③    C. ②③①④    D. ②①④③
49. What is the possible benefit of reading classic works according to the study?
A. It would help increase the sale of Shakespeare plays.
B. It helps readers learn more difficult grammar.
C. It inspires regular readers to think out of the box.
D. It forces readers to train the left hemisphere of their brain.
50. What might be the author’s attitude towards reading classics as therapy?
A. Doubtful        B. Positive       C. Indifferent         D. Opposing

People who drink a little, exercise, quit smoking and eat five servings of fruit and vegetables each day live on average 14 years longer than people who adopt none of these behaviors, researchers said on Tuesday. A collection of evidence has shown that these things contribute to healthier and longer lives, but the new study actually qualified their mixed effect, the British team said.
“These results may provide further support for the idea that even small differences in lifestyle may make a big difference to health, ” the researchers wrote in the journal PLOS Medicine.
Between 1993 and 1997 the researchers questioned 20,000 healthy British men and woman about their lifestyles. They also tested every participant’s blood to measure vitamin C intake, an indicator(指标)of how much fruit and vegetables people ate.
Then they assigned the participants aged 45-79 a score of between 0 and 4,giving one point for each of the healthy behaviors. After allowing for age and other factors that could affect the likelihood of dying, the researchers found people with a score of 0 four times as likely to die.
The researchers, who tracked deaths among the participants until 2006,also said a person with a health score of 0 had the same risk of dying as someone with score of 4 who was 14 years older.
The lifestyle change with the biggest benefit was _____________________, which led to an 80 percent improvement in health, the study found. This was followed by eating fruits and vegetables. Drinking a little and keeping active brought the same benefits, Kay-Tee Khaw at the University of Cambridge said. Do you have the four healthy living habits?

One possible version:
Dear leader,
I’m very glad that your school will hold the English Summer Camp that contains many courses, such as gardening, cooking, self-defence, nursing and so on.
I’d like to register to attend a course about gardening because I have liked flowers and grass since I was a child. I especially like playing in the garden where I can enjoy the beauty of nature.
For one thing, I hope to gain more knowledge of gardening which can help me to major in the gardening after attending college. For another, I can realize the bitterness of the gardeners to treasure plants more, and also I wish to get more information about gardening so as to study it more easily when I enter university.
